PREFACE The papers selected for this book were originally presented at the International Conference on Anthropology,Tourism and Chinese Society, which was jointly organized by the Department of Anthropology,Yunnan University, and the Department of Anthropology,The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and held at Yunnan University from 29 September to 1 October,1999.The Department of Anthropology of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,USA,co-sponsored the conference. We thank the Ford Foundation, without whose financial support we could not have held the conference. Both Yunnan University and the Department of Anthropology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong also helped to bear the cost of the conference and we are grateful. The idea of organizing an international conference on tourism and China was first proposed by the late Prof.Wang Zhu-sheng,who was the Head of the Department of Anthropology and Social Work.He passed away before the conference.Prof.Wang had contributed much to the development of anthropology in China and Yunnan in particular.See the Appendix for more on Prof.Wang's career and his major pulications. We are most pleased to dedicate this book to his honor. Various scholars have begun to research tourism in China. The present book is the first attempt to bring together anthropologists and ethnologists who have done research on tourism and Chinese society. The book begins with an overall discussion by Tan Chee-beng,followed by three papers on recent major theoretical and comparative works on the anthropological study of tourism. The next two sections are on ethnic tourism in Yunnan as well as issues of development and identity. The last section appropriately addresses the issue of conservation. We believe that this book will serve to encourage more systematic anthropological research on tourism and the anthropological study of China.
